Charity Shopping Tips

Charity shopping is something that I love to do. I love to rake and rummage, pinch the sides imagine what it would look like with a couple of darts sewn in and tilt my head looking at the potential of an item. I am known by the volunteers who never miss me as I walk in, I take two or three reusable shoppers with me because I know that chances are I will leave with plenty. I actually quite like the smell of charity shops - it makes me happy, knowing that I am probably about to unearth something that I will love that someone else has forgotten about.  Nine times out of ten if somebody compliments my handbag/cardigan/dress/scarf my answer is 'thanks! charity shop!'. Yes, I love charity shopping.

So many people have said to me 'I never see anything in charity shops....' OK, sometimes I leave empty handed myself. But I know that when someone says it in that tone of voice that they aren't spending enough time properly looking and probably go in once in a blue moon. When I go into charity shops I never know what I'm going to leave with, but I have a list of items that I would like to find and that makes you want to dig, which leads me on to tip number 1.

Tip 1. Have an Idea of What You'd Like to Find.
I'm not saying 'nude, LK Bennett heels in a size 5' or 'a pink, Kate Moss for Topshop dress in a 10', I'm saying 'nude shoes in a size 5' or 'a pale pink dress' rather than a specific branded one. If you go in with too specific an order, you will always leave empty handed. But having a rough idea of what you are after will allow you to browse the rails and know if something is likely to be suitable at a quick glance.

Tip 2. Think About the Potential.
You need to be more flexible not just on the brand that you are after (you won't find that often at all) and when it comes to items of clothing being more flexible on size is great too. What if you fall in love with something that doesn't fit? If you love something that is 3 sizes too big, think, can you take it in? Could you restyle it into something else? Could it be worn oversized?
If it is too small, on the other hand but you really love the fabric, colour or print - think about what it could become. A bag? Could you use the fabric to embellish something else?
Love the shape but hate the colour? Why not dye it? I don't often wear charity shopped items as I bought them, something normally changes somewhere along the line.

Tip 3. Visit Regularly.
If you go into a charity shop once a month, chances are, you will never find anything that you are looking for. Think about it, they are not like New Look, Primark or M&Co as they don't get daily deliveries to keep there stock levels of top selling items up. So you never know when that pink dress that you are hoping to find might be on the rail. Pop in as you are passing for a quick browse, you might strike gold.

Tip 4. If You Want it, Get it.
If it's in a charity shop, once it's gone, it's gone. So if you see something in a charity shop window that you like, go in and get it. It probably won't be there tomorrow. I recently had this when I walked past my local Cancer Research Shop, there was a beautiful Prada bag in the window, my arms were full as I was carrying things down to my mum's shop (literally, three shop units down) so I thought 'right, you will be mine' I went back having dropped my things off and it was gone. Gutted doesn't quite cut it. I wish I had gone in while juggling all of the things I was carrying and bought it there and then.
Bearing that in mind, don't buy something just because it's cheap. If you only want it because it's a bargain then put it back. You'll regret the purchase, it will be pushed to the back of a cupboard. Someone else could have purchased the item and wore it or had it out on display, enjoying i far more than you while it is hidden as 'that bargain I got'.

Tip 5.  Wash Your Purchases.
Please. When you get your goodies home, wash them first. Look at the care instructions on clothes, wash them. Pretty china tea set? Hand wash it and dry it before putting it away or using it. Shoes? Antibacterial wipes are your best friend, the same goes for leather bags. It doesn't take much effort to do and even though you don't know who has owned the item before you, you know it is clean.

Tip 6. Have Fun!
Like I said, I love charity shopping. I find it great fun and adore flicking through the rails, elbowing people as they try and barge in (it happens, believe me!) and choosing item that I believe I can breathe a new lease of life into.  Enjoy searching for your hidden treasure. I would so much rather raid, dig and search for something than walk in, find it (and fifteen others the same) folded perfectly right where I'd expect it, it's no fun that way!

The only other thing I'd like to say, is that every so often, give back. I like to go through my clothes, shoes and bags every three months or so. Everything that I don't wear or no longer like goes (back) to a charity shop. So many people are descending upon them recently and it is important to help them out by giving them more stock. So please do. When you next go in and think 'there's nothing here I like' think about what would happen if everyone who visited handed a black bag of donations in - there would be an abundance of hidden treasure.

What do you think? Do you love charity shopping too?

Vintage Style Home.

My love for vintage is not exclusive to fashion, in fact it encompasses a large part my life. From fashion, beauty, cooking, music, film and literature but also in interior design.

We currently rent our flat and so I don't want to go all out on styling the place as vintage-ly as much as I would really like to for two reasons;
1. I don't want to get pieces which fit perfectly into the flat as when we come to move they might be less practical.
2. If I get it exactly as I want, I won't want to move out and it will hinder the 'saving to buy' plans!

So, until such a time as we own a place and I give myself permission to go as vintage-styled-crazy as I wish (I'm lucky that as long as G has a computer, a couch and a television he is happy with how I decorate) I resort to pinning all of my inspiration so that I have a good mood board for when the time comes. (you can peruse my full home style board here)

The only thing with vintage styled homes is that I sometimes feel that to over-done it can look like a museum or a film set - I don't know about you but I don't want to live in either. So I like seeing a happy balance between vintage and more modern home style. I have tried to pick out some of my favourite images to show you what I really love. I have linked all of the sources of the images in the image captions.

I have already started a vintage Pyrex collection (I am too rock and roll, I know, I know.) but I definitely want to have them on show in a pretty cabinet!

My pins have told me that as far as kitchens go, I like big sinks and shades of pastel blue, turquoise and mint. They are awfully pretty though, aren't they?

I will most definitely be on the look out for mid-century modern style side boards for around the house, they are so gorgeous. (Hey, I could double up and use one for Pyrex!)

Bright and comfortable living spaces which look pretty, yet still lived in. I'm not exactly a minimalist, and living in a show home does not appeal to me.

As with living spaces, I love bright and airy bedrooms which again, still feel lived in and cosy. As well as a good floral pattern.

I hope that you like the images that I have picked out! Do you agree with me in the sense that too over-done vintage styling can be a little too much like the set of Mad Men?

Charity Shop Finds

Hello again!

I was out raiding my local charity shops this week and the Salvation Army were running a 3 for 2 on all ladies clothing, so the blouse was a freebie!

So this is my freebie blouse, originally from Austin Reed, it was the pattern which grabbed my attention in the shop as it looks very like a Cath Kidston print - to my eyes anyway! It is a lovely short sleeved blouse which I am sporting today with some high-waisted swing trousers (I do plan on getting G to snap a photo of my outfit today - if I remember!).

Next are these palazzo pants/swing trousers. These are very light and floaty, not ideal for the coming colder weather however perfect to put away for our holiday to Florida next year! I think that with a plain white or red top and some wedges these will look great!

Last up is this sweet hounds tooth print skirt, the label for this had been chopped off so I can't be sure where it came from originally. It is quite thick and stops just at the knee, I'm thinking tights and boots with this for the colder months!

Until next time!

Vintage Style Underwear Round-up

Hello again! So you might have read my post yesterday where I shared my recent vintage underwear purchases. If not, you can read it here.
As I said yesterday, today's post is for those still unconvinced about venturing into the underwear section of vintage clothes (or if you just want to do some underwear shopping!).

So let's get started! First up are my top picks from What Katie Did which if you haven't heard of before are a British company who are known for their vintage style underwear - I want one of absolutely everything! The company also have a great story which you can read here, on the companies timeline.

This is the black satin Maitresse Bullet Bra, which I adore. It is also available in white, but I personally prefer the black.

There are more items available in this range such as knickers and suspender belts, so why not treat yourself to a full set?

Here is a beautiful girdle very similar to my St Michaels one which I posted yesterday! You can also purchase the sheer gloves in the above photograph from their accessories section - very Dita Von Teese!

Another company to look at with regards to vintage style underwear are Kiss Me Deadly - which are another British based company. I want each of their collections if I am completely honest with you, they are all so beautiful!

This is the Ida collection, I do like a big of leopard print every so often! I love the deep band on the bra too, it just looks so comfortable!

The Amelie collection is also beautiful - the combination of nude with white lace is such a pretty one!

This is quite possibly my favourite - Virgin Lace bralet and briefs. I love the lace and the shape of the bralet. I think that this set is very sweet.

So that is my round up of pretty vintage-style undies. As I said, I want one of everything from both What Katie Did and Kiss Me Deadly. Ok, maybe more than one of everything. But still.

Are there any other companies which you love? I'm always on the lookout so I'd love to know!

Until next time!

Vintage Underwear Ventures.

Let's get to know each other a bit better shall we?
Vintage underwear can be very daunting - and I know that a lot of people aren't interested as they feel it is a bit , shall we say, disgusting. I will be totally honest with you, the very thought made me wince for quite a while and then I realised that I was wearing any other item so why not a bra? Or a girdle?

You might be thinking to yourself, 'why not just buy vintage style underwear?' which is a fair point and I take that completely - but why not use something which is still in perfectly good working order and would otherwise end up in a landfill?

So after much deliberation and perusing online, I purchased myself two long-line bullet bras and a girdle from eBay.

Up first is a piece of late 1940's early 1950's dead stock - meaning it was never sold for personal use, it has just been passed around still un-purchased and unloved. I love this item - it is ridiculously comfortable and gives me the shape that I want and love. Definitely a hit.

Second is a beautiful long line bra, it is such a gorgeous material, very thick and is still in great condition. The condition is fabulous aside from the poor alteration on the straps which I have tried to show it the pictures, I am going to adjust this so that it hopefully looks a bit better! Aside from this it is also a lovely garment, I really love the shape it gives and it great quality.

Last up is this 1960's St. Michaels (Marks and Sparks nowadays - we all know how fab their underwear is anyway!) black girdle.  This is amazing under dresses and skirts for holding up stockings. it is very smoothing and is basically prettier, old-school Spanx.

What do you think? Convinced? Or are you already converted? Let me know!

If you still aren't convinced, then come back tomorrow when I will be sharing my top picks of vintage style underwear! See you then!

Charity Shop Raid

As I told you last week that I was planning a charity shop raid this week, here are my finds!

These shorts are a bit loud, but I quite like them - they sit lovely just on the waist so I think I'm going to sew a couple of crop tops to go with them and stick them away for going away next summer! Plus they were only £2.99 from the Salvation Army!

Up next is possibly my favourite, this sweet little top came from Capability Scotland and for £2.50 I couldn't refuse, I wasn't intending on getting anything when I bought this but I saw it in the window and it had my name written all over it!

This is a sweet little floral skirt which set me back £3.50 in Cancer Research, it looks really pretty with a plain white t shirt and is lovely and lightweight!

I'm in love with the pattern on this blouse! I'm thinking that I'll probably wear it open with a camisole under it with a pair of high waisted jeans for a day to day look. This is a lovely quality item and was very pleased that it was only £3.99, again from Salvation Army.

I have been looking for a bag like this for a long time! I really wanted one to go with my outfit for a wedding that I was at 3 weeks ago, of course I found it too late for the wedding. However, when I clocked it in the British Heart Foundation shop I snapped it up straight away, for a bargain price of £3.99!

I ended up rearranging my living room yesterday, and once I was finished was annoyed by a rather bare-looking part of out wall, so this morning before going out for the afternoon I ran to the Cancer Research shop to see if I could find a large picture to hang in the empty space. This Monet print set me back £8.50 but it is a lovely big frame and fills the space beautifully. Plus, it is an Impressionist painting and those tend to be my favourites!

Last but by no means least is this beauty found in the British Heart Foundation shop for £5.99, I love the colour and the leather is so soft - I don't think that the lovely lady who owned it before me used it more than twice! It is in amazing condition!

Unfortunately everything which I bought is staying as it is (for now anyway!) so there won't be any refashions from this lot. Maybe next time though, I do have quite a stash going so I'll hopefully get some of that done soon!

Until next time!
